She passed away in her sleep on the morning of July 6, 2022. Her sense of humor remained intact to the end. The disease diminished her memory but not her cheerful, happy attitude. Hazel continued being active – taking dancing lessons, travelling, playing bridge and golf well into her later years until dementia forced her to slow down. They had 27 happy years together before Jim passed away unexpectedly in 1996. From Jim, Hazel learned how to play golf, a game she loved and where she met many friends. Jim had two sons, Jimmy and Brad, bringing the number of kids to five. In 1969, Hazel married the love of her life, Jim Hynds. Hazel married Ray Gotchall and they had three children, Steve, Jean and Janice. She loved her work and her customers and made many life-long friends during her career. After graduation, she worked for years at Erich of New York, a salon located in the Lipman’s Department store in downtown Salem. Hazel graduated from Silverton High School and attended Beauty School in Salem. The family home was filled with love, laughter, practical jokes and more hard work. Hazel worked hard throughout her youth – picking strawberries, hops and other crops while helping out on the family farm and with her five younger siblings. The family settled into a home and farm on West Main Street in Silverton. While proud of her rustic upbringing, she was eternally grateful that her parents packed up the car, the kids, and the dog to head for a better life in Oregon. Hazel was raised in a home with dirt floors, no electricity or plumbing and attended a one-room school. Hazel was born in Cope, Colorado, the eldest of six children born to Willard and Celia McCammon. John enjoyed visiting with people and was a good listener. He was a member of the Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association-Branch I-5 and the Historical Construction Equipment Association. John liked to take photographs and liked to listen to country, bluegrass, and gospel music. John also liked going with Larry to truck and equipment shows. He enjoyed going to the Brooks Steam-Up at Antique Powerland and showing his engines. John enjoyed collecting and restoring old tractors and antique engines. John and his coworkers built several miles of road in Marion County.Īfter retiring, John and Freda enjoyed traveling with their pickup and travel trailer and visited several other states. driving trucks and operating dozers, graders and front-end loaders until he retired at the end of 1985 at the age of 62. Somewhere in the 1950’s, John started working for Marion County Road Dept. John then operated Caterpillar dozers for Virgil Huskey, a local excavating contractor. He and an uncle of his were the main workers on this project and worked there until the job was finished. of Tacoma, Washington on a rock crushing project at Mt. John’s first job running Caterpillar bulldozers was working for Strong & McDonald Construction Co. John and Freda had one son, Larry who was born in 1955. John had a deep faith in God and enjoyed reading his Bible and inspirational books. They attended church there for several years. John met Freda Miller at the Assembly of God church in Turner, Oregon and married her in the church in 1949. It was during his stint in the service that he learned how to operate Caterpillar crawler tractors, a skill that he used the rest of his working career. After finishing high school, he was drafted into the Army during World War II and served for two years in the South Pacific. John attended Pleasant Point Grade School and Salem High School. He grew up on the family farm doing farm chores and picking strawberries in the summer. He was later joined by his brother Ralph and sister Lillian. John was born in Salem, Oregon to John and Elizabeth (Skopil) McAllister on November 13, 1923. John McAllister passed away on July 8, 2022, at the age of 98.
